![]() Hands down my favorite entree at Vino Cappuccino was the beef tenderloin in espresso crust ($17.99). The cheese was so mild that I wondered if goat cheese had mistakenly been used. Two entree-size salads were nice to share, too: roast beet ($12.99) with goat cheese, walnuts and mixed greens in a balanced white wine vinaigrette, and lovely roast pear ($10.99) over mixed greens with candied pecans, pear vinaigrette and blue cheese. The breading was too thick and the squid too chewy.īetter to order a salad. But nothing redeemed the calamari ($7.49) the night I had it. Paper-thin beef tenderloin carpaccio ($7.99) made a fine appetizer but for the drizzle of balsamic syrup, too sweet for this dish classic olive oil and lemon juice would have been better suited. And crisp, breaded zucchini frites ($5.99), served in a paper cone with garlicky aioli and mellow marinara, were delicious even unadorned. Vino Cappuccino's spinach-artichoke dip ($6.99), well-stocked with the veggies, stands among the best versions I've sampled. Tables are a mix of high-tops and standard-height and are bare for a casual feel, but the restaurant doesn't skimp on the niceties that make dining out a pleasure: cloth napkins, thin wine glasses, flatware with heft and white plates with style. Black leather tub chairs near a toasty gas fireplace that burns on chilly days were comfy, a nice spot to sip either coffee or wine while jazz plays in the background. I was partial to the area near the wine bar and espresso machines. I was struck by the spaciousness between tables I've been dining in some cramped restaurants lately. Vino Cappuccino's L-shaped dining room is pleasant - the plentiful windows afford occasional views of trains chugging past. I only wished that the list included vintages. It holds gems such as a Caldora Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and an Earthquake petite Syrah. ![]() The list, with about two dozen whites, more than 40 reds, and some sparklers and rosés, offers less-familiar names and varietals to explore. The markups have to be among the lowest in the Milwaukee area, and bottles can be purchased at retail prices to take home. The focus is moderately priced bottles from the Old and New World, with nearly half available by the glass. What a relief that Vino Cappuccino pours a strong coffee and makes an excellent, smooth latte.Īnd its wine program is admirable. My gripe lately has been with coffeehouses that serve too-weak java and bitter espresso drinks. Open since December, it seems as much a lifestyle as a restaurant, a place to begin and end the day: Early (it opens at 6), Vino Cappuccino serves Alterra-roasted coffee, scones and other baked goods late, it serves dinner and wine. Choose wisely, and you could end up feeling as I did on my last meal at Vino Cappuccino: wishing I could go back soon. The menu held other prizes among the appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrees, although some dishes needed finessing. ![]() It's also a great spot for pizza to pair with that wine and sweets to go with the coffee. ![]() The cafe and wine bar beside the charming little train station on Brookfield Road certainly does coffee and wine well. Taxes, fees not included for deals content."Vino and cappuccino - two of my favorite words," my dining companion said after learning we'd be having lunch at Vino Cappuccino in Brookfield.
