According to these, a soldier would cut off the right hand of the enemy during a war and then bring it back to his king, who would then toss the hand in a pit and offer the soldier some gold in return. So, the question is that what happened to these? It is speculated that this is the first physical evidence of an old Egyptian practice that has often been represented in ancient Egyptian art. The craziest part was that two of these pits were located right outside the throne room while all of the hands belonged to adult males. Scientists found fragments of bone deep in a cave in Siberia in April of last year, including parts of the pelvic bone, tailbone, a femur, and a lower jaw. What they discovered here were hands, yes, that’s right, dismembered human hands and nothing else. The discovery was announced by British paleoanthropologist John Bennett on 1st April, who stated This could be the most significant discovery in human origins research in 100 years. However, archaeology does provide us some really valuable insight on the behaviors of people that lived before us.įour such pits were discovered by a team of archaeologists in Avaris, Egypt, during the excavation of a 3,600-year-old palace. If there is one thing that we know by now, it’s that ancient pits always turn up something that should normally be left to fade in the pages of history, never to be remembered again. So, we did the digging (pun intended) and put together this list of the 15 most disturbing archaeological discoveries ever made. Over the years, archaeologists have been able to unearth some of the most disturbing stuff that would easily freak out any normal and sane person. Underwater archaeologists have found a 2,000-year-old skeleton belonging to a victim of the famed Antikythera shipwreck from ancient Roman times. ![]() Sure, archaeologists don’t come across mummies that are alive but they do discover them, dead that is. Still, this doesn’t mean that it is any less scary compared to all of the horror movies that you might’ve seen. ![]() It involves sitting under the sun and very gently brushing away all the soil or sand to reveal something that probably belonged to a poor guy some few thousand years ago. The truth is that archaeology is not even remotely close to any of that stuff. Or, they could be on the quest to find a golden book that could take life away from mortals while opening all sorts of cursed tombs (Brendan Fraser everybody). They are often represented as these attractive figures (we’re looking at you Harrison Ford) who are on a quest to unearth the most mystical artifacts of all time while ancient traps try to thwart their efforts. No other profession in the world, perhaps aside from the police and pizza delivery boys is more frequently misrepresented in Hollywood than the archaeologist.
